Pillbugs and Sowbugs, commonly known as 'roly-polys,' are actually terrestrial crustaceans, not insects. Because they breathe through gills, they require constant, high levels of moisture to survive. They are normally found outdoors under damp leaf litter, mulch, and decaying wood.

When the environment immediately surrounding a home is overly damp, these crustaceans can wander inside, usually ending up in basements or lower levels. Because homes are generally too dry for them, they usually die quickly indoors, leaving behind numerous crunchy bodies that require constant sweeping.
