James City is one of those places that most people in the New Bern area drive through without realizing it's its own community. Straddling Highway 70 just south of the Trent River, this unincorporated area of nearly 5,000 residents includes everything from the Taberna golf course community and the Grantham Place subdivision to the older residential streets closer to the river. The Coastal Carolina Regional Airport sits on the north side. The Croatan National Forest wraps around the southern and western edges. It's a mix of newer subdivisions and established neighborhoods, and each type brings its own pest challenges.
German cockroaches are more of a problem in James City than in most parts of the New Bern area. The density of apartments and multi-family housing along the Highway 70 corridor, combined with Eastern NC's warm, humid climate, creates conditions where roach populations build fast if they're not treated early. Our general pest plans target German cockroaches specifically — we treat interior harborage areas, apply gel baits in kitchens and bathrooms, and monitor on a quarterly cycle. Truth is, once German roaches establish themselves in a multi-unit building, they spread unit to unit through shared walls and plumbing chases. Early treatment makes a huge difference.
Termites are a concern across James City, but particularly in the Taberna and Carolina Colours areas where homes built in the mid-2000s are now aging past their original pre-treatment window. The sandy, low-lying soil near the Trent River and Brices Creek drainages holds moisture well, which keeps subterranean termite colonies active year-round. Mosquitoes and ticks are a fact of life here, especially for homes near the Croatan Forest buffer and along the creek drainages south of Highway 70.
